Our Best Experience

Conway was born at St. John's Mercy and diagnosed two days later with a set of rare, congenital heart defects. He was "balanced" at birth but stayed in the NICU for a couple of days for observation. We were shocked by the diagnosis, as we already had two heart-healthy children at home and had an uncomplicated pregnancy. The nurses in the NICU took excellent care of my son as well as my husband and I. We used to stop in to visit his main nurse when we were on campus for appointments with his cardiologist, Dr. Burt Bromberg, or his GI doctor, Dr. Lynda Brady. Those two specialists were a real godsend for us. Both of them are absolutely amazing physicians and even better human beings. We even keep up with nurses on Facebook!

Having a son with such a complex heart makes even the simple things a big deal. We have visited the ER several times at St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital. Each time, we have been given expert care and understanding about his special needs. The staff goes out of their way to assure that he's safe and comfortable. A couple of times he has been admitted - once for almost a week in the pediatric intensive care unit. Being barely 2-years-old, this was a scary experience for him. But the staff did all they could to help him (and us) adjust to the circumstances. We were allowed to stay with him around the clock, which helped him tremendously. When space allowed, we were offered a room right down the hall where we could get some rest while he napped. The Ronald McDonald Room came in very handy as well. We were able to have a place for our older children and relatives to congregate while we spent time with him in his room.

We have had inpatient stays at three hospitals, and St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital has by far been our best experience!
