Jack's Story
I am a grant writer for St. John's Mercy Foundation so I write about all of the great things that St. John's Mercy has to offer, but until I was a patient myself and had a son in the NICU I never truly understood what a wonderful hospital we have here in St. Louis. After a very difficult and scary pregnancy, my beautiful son, Jack was born at 35 weeks and spent 26 days in the NICU. Every day in the NICU is an emotional roller coaster, but the wonderful staff, especially the nurses make the ride a little smoother. They not only took excellent care of Jack, but they always took care of our emotional and physical needs as well. The nurses and child life specialist made my two older daughters feel special and were so kind to give them treats to keep them entertained while they were there visiting their baby brother. Everyone from the neonatal doctors, nurses, pharmacist, pulmnologist, therapists, cuddlers and even the cleaning lady were caring, and definitely had the mercy compassion and spirit that I always write so much about in my grants. Jack has cystic fibrosis and I know we have a lifetime of care that will be needed for him. Our pulmnologist is excellent and we feel confident that we will get the personal care that we need right here at St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital. The NICU nurses and staff will always hold a special place in our heart for taking such good care of Jack and my entire family. I tell everyone I can about what a wonderful Children's Hospital we have and I speak not only as a St. John's Mercy co-worker, but as a very grateful mother too.
